STI testing window periods & when you should collect your samples

The window period for an STI test is the time between potential exposure to an infection and when a test can reliably detect it. This is because it takes time for the infection to reach detectable levels in the body.

Window periods:

STI Detectable after Sample
Chlamydia2 weeksUrine/swabs
Gonorrhoea2 weeksUrine/swabs
HIV45 daysblood
Syphilis3 monthsblood
Hepatitis B3 monthsblood
Hepatitis C3 monthsblood

If your sh.uk consultation recommends tests for STI's that are not detectable for 3 months and you are testing because of recent sexual activity, we do not recommend waiting that long before sending your samples back.

  • We advise a multiple test approach because of varying window periods
  • You can order up to 4 STI test kits per year through sh.uk
  • You will need to start a new online consultation everytime you wish to test.

Select from the below three scenarios to reveal sh.uk's recomendations on when to take your samples:

Are you testing because of recent sexual activity?
  • Wait at least 2 weeks after your last sexual encounter to collect your samples.
  • We will still test for all the STI’s recommended on your consultation regardless of window periods.
  • It is then advised to retest again 2.5 months after your first test, if your first test was 2 weeks after your last sexual activity.
    • you can retest sooner as long as all STIs have become detectable.

At minimum, this allows us to test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea based on your most recent sexual activity and to start treatment if you test positive. We’ll also test for any other STIs recommended during your consultation, which may have been acquired prior to that activity. When you retest in 2.5 months, you’ll need to start a new consultation on sh.uk or visit your local sexual health clinic.

If you suspect you may have caught a specific STI
  • Refer to the window periods on how long to wait for the specific STI.
  • If the window period shows to wait more than 45 days but your sh.uk consultation reccomends to test for more than one specific STI, we recommend testing 2 weeks after your last sexual activity and then retest again in 2.5 months.
    • you can retest sooner as long as all STI window have become detectable.
  • If you think you may have been exposed to HIV, ask your GP or local sexual health clinic about PEP.

Unless you have been informed that a past or present sexual partner has tested positive for an STI, try not to be too concerned. Symptoms can be used for guidance but can also be present for none STI related issues. Only testing can determine whether you have an STI.

PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure and ideally within 24 hours, and taken daily for 28 days.

PrEP is a preventative medication that HIV-negative individuals can take to significantly reduce their risk of contracting HIV. More information on PEP & PrEP

If you are NOT concerned about a specific sexual encounter or STI
  • Do not wait, collect your samples straight away and post them back

Generally, it's recommended to get tested at least once a year, or more often if engaging in condomless sex with new or casual partners.

If your test kit hasn't arrived

Our test kits are sent by Royal Mail first class post. Most test kits arrive within 1-3 working days, however there are sometimes delays.

If more than 7-10 working days have passed and your kit has not arrived, please contact our support team

Your STI test results

Most people will get a message to login and check their results online normally within 2-4 days of us receiving your samples. However, in some cases an NHS clinician will call to discuss your test results and treatment.

To learn more about the different results, please go our page: What do my results mean?

Important for PrEP

If you have a blood testing kit as part of SH.UK Digital PrEP service, we cannot provide PrEP until we have your blood results back; especially if testing your kidney function.
